English

The English language is the central component of education for today’s students. It is used in all of their classes and decisively affects grades, social interaction, and their ultimate success in life after school.

Because of its importance, the department strives to insure that students are well versed in the skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking the English language. We design our courses with those goals in mind, and our teachers have a wide variety of backgrounds, education, and techniques to help students acquire the necessary skills for their future.

CLASSES: READING I, II, AND III

Our goal is to increase our student’s independent reading level so they can be successful in all of their classes and attain an appreciation of reading. We use differentiated reading strategies and techniques so that each student can learn in the way that is best for him/her and continue to use the skills acquired throughout their lives. The Read 180 program and System 44 are an integral part of our curriculum. The Scholastic Book company develops these programs, and they are known for their years of research on reading strategies that work best for our children. Students work in rotations which include utilizing the computer, working in small groups with the teacher, and reading independently. Independent reading books come with the programs, so the students are working at the appropriate level. We encourage them to read a novel of their own choosing at home every evening to boost their reading speed and reading level.

College Board AP Capstone Diploma Program

Westview High School is proud to be one of only twenty-seven high schools in Arizona currently offering the AP Capstone Diploma Program. Participating in the program can help students stand out to colleges in the application process, develop key academic skills they will use in college and beyond, become self-confident independent thinkers and problem solvers, and earn college credit based on exam performance.
